So this morning I woke up thinking about the air we breathe, and honestly that is a weird thing to think about before coffee. But environment is one of those topics that touches everything, you know, the water, the sky, the food on the table.
I was reading that the world's share of energy from renewable sources has been creeping up, only very slowly. From the 1990s to now it went from about seventeen percent to just under nineteen. That is almost thirty years for a two point gain. It tells you how hard it is to shift a whole planet off fossil fuels.
When I talk about this in English I sometimes freeze on words like emissions or sustainability. The trick for me is to say the simple version first: we burn less coal, we use more sun and wind. Then build up.
Actually my grandfather used to say, take care of the land and the land takes care of you. That little line keeps me calm when the vocabulary runs out.
Last week we did maths, and the slope of that energy line is basically flat, almost zero. Seeing a flat line in real life makes the calculus feel alive.
I think the most important word today is transition, the move from old energy to new. And I want to be able to say that without stopping to hunt for the word. (transition
• 现在完成进行时(持续至今、强调缓慢过程):The share has been creeping up slowly. I have been thinking about this for weeks
• The trick is to + V(引出做法,口语化):The trick is to say the simple version first, then build up.
• when the vocabulary runs out(run out 用完):vocabulary runs out 表示词汇不够用了,run out 是不及物短语,不接宾语。
• air pollution is very big → severe / serious / heavy air pollution(very big 是中式,heavy 也可)
• protect environment → protect the environment(environment 前加 the)
• use new energy → use renewable energy / clean energy(new energy 是中式,英文说 renewable / clean)
• the weather is polluted → the air is polluted(weather 不接 polluted)
• I very like green things → I am really into green living
• pollution → contAMInation / emissions / degradation
• renewable → clean / green / sustainable
• reduce → cut / slash / curb / shrink
• protect → safeguard / conserve / preserve
• important → vital / crucial / pivotal

新学①:The trick is to + V(引出做法,口语化、轻松)
• The trick is to say the simple version first, then build up.
新学②:It tells you + (that) 从句(用事实说明一个道理)
• The flat line tells you how hard it is to shift a whole planet off fossil fuels.
旧句回扣:The more ..., the more ...(回扣 09-13 教育)
• The more we burn clean energy, the less we choke on smoke.

2. run out | 用完(vocabulary runs out 词汇不够了)
3. the trick is to | 窍门是(引出做法,自然不刻意)
The line graph shows the world's renewable energy consumption as a share of total final energy consumption between 1990 and 2019. Overall, the global figure stayed stubbornly low and rose only slightly across the three decades.
In 1990 the share stood at about 16.7%. It hovered around 17% through the 1990s and early 2000s, dipping to roughly 16.7% around 2004 to 2008. From 2010 onward the line turned upward: it reached 17.4% in 2015 and then climbed more clearly, hitting 18.1% in 2018 and 18.6% in 2019, the highest point in the whole period.
In short, although renewable energy edged up, the world still drew more than four fifths of its final energy from non renewable sources at the end of the period. The change was real but painfully slow.

The word sustainable carries a quiet engineering idea. It comes from the Latin sus- (up) and tenere (to hold): literally "to hold up". A thing is sustainable if it can hold itself up without collapsing. The same root sits in tenacious (holding on) and tenable (able to be held).
Now pair that with the line graph above. The world's renewable share has been tenable but barely moving. A slope near zero means the rate of change is almost nothing, the very idea we met in calculus on 09-12, where the derivative measures how fast a curve climbs. Here the curve is almost flat, so the derivative is close to zero. That flatness is the whole story: we know the direction, we are just moving at a crawl.
Real change needs the slope to steepen. Policy, price and habit must push the line up faster than the gentle lift we saw after 2015. Until then, "sustainable" stays a hope we hold up rather than a fact we have built.
• sustainable = sus- (up) + tenere (hold);本义"撑得住的"
• renewable = re- (again) + novus (new);"新了又新"
• emission = e- (out) + mittere (send);"送出之物"
• transition = trans- (across) + ire (go);"走过去"
• derivative = de- (down/from) + rivus (stream);由"取自源头"引申为"导数、导出"
Sustainability means holding the land up so it does not collapse, sus-tenere. And Liangzhou has practiced that idea for two thousand years without ever naming it.
The old saying goes, 凉州畜牧天下饶、凉州绯色天下最, meaning Liangzhou's herds were the richest under heaven and its crimson dyes the finest in the world. To keep herds rich and dyes fine, you must not strip the grassland bare; you must let the land renew. That is sustainable living long before the word existed.
From Liangzhou Lotus Mountain (姑臧紫山, Gucang Zishan) to the whole Hexi Corridor, the oasis taught a lesson the modern world is still learning: take only what renews. When the wider world fell into turmoil, Liangzhou held as a steady ground for people and for the land alike.
So the flat red line on today's graph is not just a world problem. It is the same old question Liangzhou's herders asked: will we leave the ground able to hold up the next generation?
• nov / novus(新):renewable(新了又新)→ novel(新奇的)→ innovate(革新)→ renovate(翻新)。串联:Renewable energy is novel only until it becomes normal; we must keep innovating.
• ten / tenere(持):sustainable(撑得住)→ tenacious(坚韧)→ tenant(租户,持有者)→ contain(容纳)。串联:To sustain is to hold up; a tenacious mind holds up under pressure.
• mit / miss(送):emission(送出)→ transmit(传送)→ mission(使命,所遣之事)→ commit(委付)。串联:An emission is something sent out; a mission is something sent you to do.
• trans / tra(过):transition(走过去)→ transport(运输)→ translate(翻译)。串联:The transition to clean energy must be transported into every household.
• grad / gress(阶、步):degrade(往下走)→ grade(等级)→ progress(前进)。串联:Land degrades when progress ignores the soil.
• duc / duct(引,回扣 09-13 教育):education(引出心智)→ produce(生产)。串联:We must produce clean energy, not just consume it.

• Q: Do you think environmental protection is everyone's duty? | 关键词:sustainable, transition, everyday
• Q: What do you do to live green? | 关键词:conserve, curb, habit
• Q: Will renewable energy replace fossil fuels?
• 连读 give way to | 母语音标 /ɡɪv weɪ tu/ → /ɡɪvweɪtʊ/ | 国际IPA /ɡɪv weɪ tu/ → /ɡɪv.weɪ.tʊ/:give 尾 v 与 way 可连,way 与 to 也可连。
Some people say economic growth must come before environmental protection. Others argue the environment must be protected first. Discuss both views.
(The trick is to find a path that does both);用今天线图数据做论据(三十年仅加 1.9 个百分点,说明"先污染后治理"代价惨重、且转型慢得惊人);sustainable 本义"撑得住",环境撑不住经济也塌。
I read a short piece about floating solar, panels laid on top of reservoirs and lakes. The idea is neat: the water keeps the panels cool, so they work better, and the panels shade the water, so less evaporates. Some places in Asia have been trying it.
In English I would say: engineers are putting solar arrays on calm water to save land and cut evaporation. It is a small story, not a big political one, but it shows how the energy transition shows up in ordinary places.
The word that stuck with me is array, a tidy row of things. Anyway, seeing real projects makes the textbook words land.
