The roots of "transport" and the Silk Road
The word "transport" comes from Latin trans- (across) and portare (to carry). So to transport literally means "to carry across". The Silk Road was history's greatest transport network, and Liangzhou, anciently called Wuwei, was one of its key stops. Along it, silk, books, and languages were carried across continents. To understand transport is to see how people turned distance into connection, moving goods and ideas farther than any single traveller could walk.
